There have been a number of data points recently that have caught me off guard. I understand if you are retired, a student, handicapped, doing heavy manual labor, or under-employed how you might not work 40 hours a week. Working 40 hours a week or less is fantastic if you are happy with your income and career, not bored out of your mind, and can get away with it. Unfortunately, I am neither skilled enough to do what I want with that little ,oney of time, nor do I have the courage maje work so little for what I am being compensated. I think I would probably get fired if I worked that little. Besides, I have at least 60 hours of work energy in me a week at the age of Might as well utilize it before it fades, because I used to have 80 hours of work energy in my 20s! Most people who live near Toronto’s Chinatown neighborhood are quite familiar with the smell of fried rice and the sight of duck on a skewer. For broke students and struggling adults, it’s comforting to know that, at any time, you can walk a block and grab a plate of cheap, delicious food and watch a crew of chefs and servers turn out dishes like clockwork. However, there’s also a part that reeks dangerously of ethnic tourism —paying for food that would be way more expensive from a European restaurant, and enjoying a culture which many of us only seem to be interested in when our stomach rumbles. For many broke Canadians, it’s a rite of passage, but that doesn’t make it right. Yesterday, a large study looking at Toronto’s Chinese restaurant employees found that over half of them are underpaid, overworked, and treated unfairly by their employers. While the hustle and bustle of Chinatown makes it a hotspot for terrible labor conditions and illegal work, the numbers themselves are quite unsettling. Most employees surveyed were found to be working 44 to 60 hours a week with no overtime pay or vacation days, and many were paid half in cash, half by check—allowing employers to dodge taxes and screw over their employees with unaccounted hours. But numbers only tell part of the story.
Money, money, money
To see what it’s really like for the employees of Toronto’s Chinese restaurants, I stopped by Chinatown for a few hours and asked the people who experience it on a day-to-day basis about their side of the data. He works as a computer technician but doesn’t speak English well and the person who promised him a job over here actually ended up [having him] on a list of other people. What are most people ignorant of that prevents them becoming financially wealthy? Nobody ever got rich working for a living. What in the world can it mean that working doesn’t make you rich? Well, how many of those fabled bad guys our progressive left obsesses over, the dreaded 1 percent, punch a clock, do you think? To be sure, you will work hard to get rich, and the harder and smarter you work, the better your chances.
Did I mention I do not work for a commercial enterprise? I get what you’re saying — my periods of almost nothingness have lasted months at a time and I started feeling pretty shit at times. I would eventually do some more IT-specific training to try and feel a bit better but in my case the crazy periods always came again, without fail, so if I could have a calm period now I’d jump at it.
