I did neither of those things. I did however write more novellas than short stories so I sort of met the goal, probably, word count wise. The novellas seemed to sell slightly better than shorts. I also spent a lot of time learning about romance and plotting out a romance.

I’m struggling to find where I actually need more detail. I’ll leave someone else to reply about the length, but for the love of god, don’t describe it as a novel. You’ll be hunted down by readers with pitchforks and flaming torches. Someone with more experience can tell you if it’s likely to sell, but if they say «no,» then I would suggest using that story as the carrot that you dangle to get mailing list sign-ups.

Seconding this idea, OP. Shorts that aren’t quite saleable length can definitely still be used as bait for NL sign-ups! You could write something else, something longer, and then use that as a bonus story, or as a bonus mailing list signup story If you want it as a full-blown story, read it one more time. Can you describe the setting more? Are you using your senses? Sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing If you’re in first person, are you sharing the character’s thoughts?
